What is an EWPA Yellow Card?

The Yellow Card program is designed to ensure that the holder has been trained in the safe use and operation of various types of elevated work platforms.

Why do we need EWP training?

Operators of equipment such as scissor lifts, boom lifts and vertical lifts require training so they are not a danger to themselves or others. It is a Safework Australia (OHS Act 2000) requirement that :

  • Employers must provide information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure the health and safety of employees at work.
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of plant must ensure equipment is safe to use when properly used and must make available adequate information about the conditions for the safe use of the equipment manufactured or supplied.
  • Employees must co-operate with efforts to comply with OHS requirements.

Basically, if you are operating an EWP (elevated work platform) without recognised training and there is an incident, you have left yourself and/or your employer exposed to legal proceedings which may also affect your insurance etc.

Do I need a Yellow Card if I currently have a High Risk WP Boom license?

According to Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, the WP covers Boom Lifts over 11 metres only and a Yellow Card is required for scissor and vertical lift devices.

How long after training can I operate the EWP?

Straight away, an automated text is sent to the trainees nominated email address at the conclusion of the course. This can be used as proof of having passed the course while your card is being produced. Cards are printed on a Monday,  if you haven’t received your card after a few weeks, contact the EWPA and they will chase it up. The email is valid for 60 days.

Do I need to upgrade to the new Yellow Card if I have the old one?

As far as the EWPA is concerned, the old card is still valid; however we are aware of some sites insisting on the new card. This ensures that the training is more up to date and being a photo ID, makes it easier to establish the identity of the operator.

Is it really necessary to have the Elevating Work Platform Association (EWPA) Yellow Card?

The EWPA Yellow Card is the only card recognised by all the major construction companies and valid Australia wide. Some companies offer EWP training which meet WHS requirements, however, they are not recognised by some of the tier one construction companies such as those involved in the various tunnel projects.
